I missed Math Night to attend a Town Hall Meeting (one of 900 across the country) on Underage Drinking. I was reminded that the average age of first use is 12 and 40% of kids who begin drinking before age 13 will become alcoholics. 80% of youth in detention are there on drug related crimes. Families can help by letting your children know you love them and helping them maintain positive connections with friends.

Heartland Big Brothers Big Sisters also has a grant to match mentors with students who have a parent in jail. They call it BOAT Building Our Assets Together. For more information call 464-2227. This is the number for any parent of a child 7 and over who is interested in having a big brother or sister.
